82 | Got Resentment? Biblical Encouragement on How to Embrace Peace
Find the full episode here >>> Resentment: The Silent Thief of Your Spiritual Peace
Hidden deep beneath our smiles and daily routines, resentment can silently rob us of joy, peace, and spiritual connection. We often carry these wounds far longer than we realize, allowing them to color our relationships and distance us from God's healing presence.
This powerful episode explores the subtle ways bitterness takes root in our hearts and offers a compassionate roadmap for finding freedom. We dive into biblical wisdom from Hebrews 12:15 about how resentment spreads beyond ourselves and examine Joseph's remarkable journey from betrayal to forgiveness. Rather than suggesting quick fixes or spiritual bypassing, we acknowledge the very real pain of wounds while offering practical, Scripture-based approaches to genuine healing.
What makes this conversation unique is the holistic approach to emotional and spiritual wellness. Beyond prayer and Scripture, we explore how God's natural gifts—including therapeutic-grade essential oils—can support our nervous systems during the challenging work of releasing long-held hurts. The Aroma Freedom Technique offers a bridge between spiritual intention and physiological calm, creating space for the Holy Spirit's gentle healing work.
Whether you're carrying decades of hurt or simply notice resentment creeping into your thoughts, this episode provides compassionate guidance for acknowledging pain, choosing forgiveness, and maintaining freedom through gratitude, empathy, and regular spiritual check-ins. Most importantly, you'll discover that healing from resentment isn't about excusing what happened—it's about releasing your right to hold onto pain while trusting God with the outcome.
Ready to break free from what's been weighing you down? Listen now and take your first step toward living with a lighter heart and deeper spiritual connection. Have you ever felt the weight of resentment pulling at your soul so subtle it hides behind your smile but so loud it echoes in your quiet moments? What if letting go isn't about excusing the pain but stepping into freedom? Today we're going deeper into the spiritual, emotional and practical journey of healing resentment, with Christ as our anchor and peace as our promise. But first funny story. When I first began my seminary work while serving two church congregations full-time, everyone assumed I had my daily devotional time perfectly organized. But truth be told, there were mornings I could barely find five minutes to catch my breath, let alone dive into deep reflection. One day, as I rushed out the door with mismatched shoes, I realized that even in my chaos there was a lesson. Embracing God's grace and self-forgiveness, I realized that true success in my devotional life requires prioritizing my spiritual practices.
Paula Behrens:Are you finding it challenging to maintain your spiritual practices or yearning for a more peaceful, God-aligned day? I'm Paula and I've been there too. It's time to bring beauty and balance back into your quiet time. All right, let's get started. Grab your Bible, dust off your journal and cozy up to your favorite beverage and let's dive in.
Paula Behrens:Let me ask you something, not to make you feel guilty or uncomfortable, but to spark something inside. Have you been carrying a burden of bitterness longer than you've carried a blessing of peace? Because, friend, resentment doesn't just live in the past, it seeps into our present, it can steal our sleep, our joy and our sense of direction, plus, it builds walls between you and your Creator, God. But here's the good news you don't have to stay there, not even for one more day.
Paula Behrens:In today's episode, we're exploring how resentment takes root in our hearts, what the Bible says about letting go and how to walk toward healing and freedom with confidence, not denial. This is not about pretending you didn't get hurt. It's about acknowledging the pain of what happened and placing it into the hands of the only One who can truly redeem it. Let's begin where most of us start somewhere between silence and anger. Feelings of resentment often start with something small, a dismissive word, a broken promise, a betrayal. Maybe someone disrespected your boundaries, ignored your needs or overlooked your well-intended efforts. And while you may have moved on externally, something inside of you paused. You didn't even realize how much until the day when someone mentioned that place, their name or that situation, and it felt as though the wind had been knocked right out of you. This is the subtle, gentle way resentment can start to grow. The Bible calls it a root, and for good reason.
Paula Behrens:Resentment is often invisible at the surface, but gaining strength underneath, silently coloring your emotions, shaping your thoughts and affecting your relationships. We can learn from Hebrews, chapter 12, verse 15, which says that we are to see to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. The root of resentment is sneaky like that. It doesn't just affect you, it spreads. It hardens your tone when you're speaking with loved ones, it steals your ability to trust those around you and over time it can even build barriers between you and the Holy Spirit. So how do we begin to dig out that root?
Paula Behrens:The first step is to acknowledge the pain. That sounds simple, but it's the one step people often avoid. Why? Because it forces us to confront what we wish we could forget and it makes us feel weak. But let me gently remind you, what you push down into your subconscious, you prolong. And God is not surprised by your hurt, he's not asking you to conceal it, in fact, he invites you to talk with him about the situation so he can heal what you've been trying to manage on your own. In Psalm, chapter 34, verse 18, we hear: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. God's not close to those pretending that everything is okay. He's close to the brokenhearted. You don't have to be strong for God to come near, you just have to be real.
Paula Behrens:After recognizing the wound, the next step is something that often seems impossible, forgiveness. I understand. Even now, just hearing the word might make your stomach churn a bit, but here's the thing. Forgiveness doesn't mean pretending something didn't happen. It doesn't mean trusting the person again or even reconciling with them. Forgiveness is releasing your right to hold on to that pain while trusting God with the outcome. Why is forgiveness so important? Because resentment and unforgiveness keeps you in bondage, not the person who hurt you. That person may have already moved on, they may not even understand the depth of your pain. But you, you deserve freedom from that pain, which comes when you say: God, I give this to you. I choose peace over bitterness. I choose healing over holding on. And yes, it's a choice you may have to make more than once. Sometimes we forgive with our mouth before our hearts are ready. That's okay, though, so keep saying it, keep surrendering it, keep praying through it.
Paula Behrens:If you need a biblical reminder that forgiveness is possible, look at the life of Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused and thrown into prison, he had every right to be resentful, every reason to hate. But when the time came and those same brothers stood before him in fear of what he might do, Joseph chose mercy. In Genesis, chapter 50, verse 20, he says to his brothers: You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, so that I could accomplish what is now being done. That's the healing forgiveness brings. It shifts our perspective from pain to purpose. And, of course, our ultimate model is Jesus. Hanging on the cross, wrongly accused, beaten, mocked and in excruciating pain, what does he say? Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. If Jesus could forgive from the cross, we can forgive too. Not in our own strength are we able to forgive, but through God's strength. So what does that look like and how do we actually begin? Well, we begin by praying honest, open prayers. We don't filter them, we don't rush them. We bring all the broken pieces before God. Then we invite the Holy Spirit to begin the healing process.
Paula Behrens:One way I personally help others walk through this journey is with the Aroma Freedom Technique, a biblically sound approach that uses Young Living essential oils to support the emotional work of letting go. God gave us these oils, these aromatic molecules from the plants, he gave them to us as tools, as gifts, to bring calm and peace into the nervous system so that deeper healing can begin. And when we pair God's natural aromas with prayer and scripture, walls come down. In the coaching space I offer, we won't just talk about forgiveness, we'll walk through it together. We'll apply the oils, we'll breathe, we'll trust in God's ability to heal and we will uncover and then release whatever is blocking your success mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Together, step by step, we will identify and release the barriers that are blocking your ability to let go.
Paula Behrens:Because here's the truth when you let go of resentment, you make space for God's peace, you stop rehearsing the offense and start renewing your mind, and you become more emotionally available for those who do love and support you. Here's what I want you to remember. This process is not for the other person, it's for your freedom, and freedom is something we maintain, it's something we do daily. It's one thing to forgive, it's another to keep our hearts tender when new wounds try to settle in.
Paula Behrens:So how do we stay free? We embrace gratitude. It's hard to hold resentment and gratitude in the same heart. When you begin to feel anger, shift your focus to something God has done for you, not to dismiss your pain, but to reclaim your perspective. Gratitude gently reminds us that bitterness doesn't have the final say. Then cultivate empathy. Sometimes the person who hurt you was acting out of their own unhealed pain. That doesn't excuse their behavior, but it helps you detach from the personal sting. When you say, I don't understand why they did it, but I trust that God sees all things, you can take your power back.
Paula Behrens:And don't forget to check in with God on a regular basis. Bitterness doesn't usually shout, it normally whispers. So take time every week to sit with God and ask: Lord, is there anything in my heart that's growing where it shouldn't be? He will be faithful to show you and he will be gentle when he does. Lastly, serve someone else. When you start to focus outward, you disarm the self-centered pull of resentment. Helping someone, encouraging a friend or volunteering at your church, these acts realign your heart with God's love.
Paula Behrens:Friend, you don't have to do this alone. Paula Behrens:If you don't have these specific oils, don't worry. Although chosen by the psychologist who developed the technique and trained me for your optimal healing, there are other natural aromas you can use temporarily, like the invigorating scent of a freshly peeled grapefruit, the fresh aroma of crushed rosemary, the warm spice of cinnamon, the coolness of mint leaves, the herbaceous fragrance of basil, the refreshing scent of eucalyptus or the soothing aroma of peppermint tea. These natural scents can still significantly support the healing process. However, for optimal results and the full benefits intended by this technique, I highly recommend using the carefully crafted Young Living Essential Oil blends designed specifically for this purpose.
