Hey, I’m Paula, a grandma, pastor, and follower of Jesus, and I was once a new believer who struggled to maintain spiritual practices amidst my busy life — balancing a demanding work load, pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree at a Christian university, caring for my kiddos, and discerning my calling into ministry was no easy feat. My approach to prayer, journaling, and studying scripture lacked consistency and structure, making it challenging to truly deepen my relationship with God.
I finally realized that if I was going to be successful in my devotional life, I needed to prioritize my spiritual practices just as I would any other important commitment. I created a plan that fits ME — a simple, devotional routine that filled me with excitement and anticipation. A lifestyle that made connecting with God enjoyable, rewarding, and deeply meaningful. And I'm ready to share it with you!

Paula Behrens:When I first began my seminary work while serving two church congregations full-time, everyone assumed I had my daily devotional time perfectly organized. But, truth be told, there were mornings I could barely find five minutes to catch my breath, let alone dive into deep reflection. One day, as I rushed out the door with mismatched shoes, I realized that even in my chaos there was a lesson. Embracing God's grace and self-forgiveness, I realized that true success in my devotional life requires prioritizing my spiritual practices.

Paula Behrens:Welcome to today's episode Faith-F ueled Confidence, the Power of Positive Affirmations and Bible Study. I'm thrilled to have you joining me for this transformative journey, a journey where we will uncover the truth of who we are in Christ, and learn how to embrace a confidence that stems from spiritual truths rather than from fleeting worldly measures. Okay, so wrestling with insecurity is a common challenge. Whispered by the world and swirling within our own thoughts, it tells us that we need to be more, do more and achieve more. The trouble with this never-ending challenge is that it keeps us continuously striving and it prevents us from ever truly being. But here's a thought, God never asks us to be more in the world's eyes, but he does ask us to be faithful and to rest in his promises.
Paula Behrens:Seen through the lens of faith, insecurity becomes an invitation to build confidence, not on temporary achievements, but on God's eternal truth for us. The Bible tells us in a wonderful way that God, who is the Father of Jesus, has given us every possible spiritual gift through our connection with Christ. It says that we, as his followers, are destined to lead lives that reflect holiness and purity carried out with love. That's our destiny as believers. God's special plan was set in motion long ago, envisioning a future where anyone who decides to trust in Jesus becomes a part of his family, a part of the body of Christ. Those chosen before the foundation of the world, as in Ephesians 1.4, refers to everyone who will make a personal decision for Jesus Christ. We all have the opportunity to become children of God if we so choose. Through faith in Christ, we are adopted into God's family.
Paula Behrens:Gaining confidence isn't about what we can do. It's more about who we are as believers. We feel secure because we know we are loved and valued as children of God. This understanding encourages us to think about the stories we've believed about ourselves and how they've shaped our view of who we are. What lies have shaped how you see yourself? Consider the untruths spoken over you by society, media or even your internal dialogue. These voices often tell us that we are less than, invisible or unwanted. Yet Ephesians reassures us of a different narrative. Those who have placed their faith in Christ were chosen.
Paula Behrens:Imagine how your perspective might change if you fully embraced the truth that your profession of faith in Christ is purposeful and deeply desired by the Father, the creator of the universe. Listen to the words of the psalmist as he speaks with God, saying, "For you created my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. I know that full well."
Paula Behrens:This scripture is an antidote to the pervasive whispers of insecurity. Its message is profound. Every part of you, every part of you, is intentionally crafted by God. What parts of yourself have you struggled to accept? Whether it's your appearance, your talents or your circumstances? Know that each piece is part of a divinely orchestrated design. In what ways can you begin to thank God for how he has made you, turning your insecurities into affirmations of faith or embracing gratitude as your new mantra, allowing it to transform your heart and mind? Think about the Apostle Paul's words when he said, "But God said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, so I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me." This passage turns the world's view of strength upside down, reminding us that vulnerability is not a weakness but a gateway for divine power. Where do you feel most weak or inadequate? Instead of masking those areas, what if you invited God's strength into them? By surrendering, we allow God's grace to transform our weaknesses into testimonies of His faithfulness. Let your inadequacies testify to the sufficiency of Christ's power, demonstrating that true strength is found in reliance on him.
Paula Behrens:Armed with these truths, it's time to infuse our daily lives with positive affirmations rooted in faith. Affirmations should not only focus on self-improvement, but also on reminding ourselves of God's truth and promises. Examples might include, "I am chosen and loved by God. My worth is anchored in His eternal love." "I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Every part of me is designed with purpose." "God's power is perfected in my weakness. I find strength through Christ." By consistently reaffirming these truths, you renew your mind and align your heart with a faith-based identity, dislodging any lies or fears that previously took root.
Paula Behrens:Incorporate time for Bible study and prayer into your daily routine to nurture this newfound confidence. Dedicating yourself to these devotions requires setting healthy boundaries. Consider this, what boundaries do you need to establish to protect your time with God? Maybe it's carving out moments of silent reflection, freeing yourself from digital distractions, or prioritizing prayer before diving into daily tasks? The act of setting boundaries and affirming truths is not merely for self-betterment, but serves as a way to realign with your God-given purpose.
Paula Behrens:Reflect on how embracing a confidence rooted in faith can reshape your life's calling. Purposeful living is lived with intention, where actions are driven by a higher calling rather than external validation. Armed with scripture, gratitude and divine strength, you can let your light shine brightly and gracefully. Confidence cultivated in Christ carries the unwavering assurance that you walk in the will of the one who never changes. Scripture reminds us that even when the world wavers, God's promises are constant. God is your firm foundation through every storm or insecurity.
Paula Behrens:Let's end today's episode by revisiting one more reflection. You don't have to wait until you feel ready or enough to step boldly into your God-given path. Confidence is built one faithful step at a time, as you walk with the Lord daily. God does not demand perfection, but yearns for belief, belief in him, belief in his promises and belief in the extraordinary person he has created you to be. Let us take a moment to thank God for our very being.
Paula Behrens:Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the unwavering truth found in your word. May you continue to shape us, mold us and align us with your divine purpose. Let courage swell up in our hearts and ignite a light that reflects your grace and love to the world around us. Amen. Remember, as you journey through this week, let these affirmations be your anchor and his promises be your guide. Rise to the call of living boldly in faith, with unwavering confidence in the truth of who God says you are.
Paula Behrens:Thank you for tuning in today and remember, just like setting biblical boundaries, it's okay to say no to things that don't serve you well, like that third piece of cake at the church potluck.
