Paula Behrens:

Hello friends, today we will be talking about something that touches everyone at one time or another. It's that familiar feeling of dread or worry that creeps up when we least expect it, bringing along with it a cloud of doubt and fear. But what if I told you that we have a powerful tool directly within our reach to combat anxiety? Well, of course, you've probably already guessed it's prayer. When combined with faith and gratitude, prayer helps us navigate turbulent emotions like anxiety, fear, doubt, stressfulness and more. Welcome to another episode of Living on Purpose in Christ. Hi, I'm your host, paula, and today we're exploring something that I think will be helpful for most all of us, and that is how to harness the power of prayer to conquer anxiety. Our guiding scripture today is Philippians, chapter 4, verses 6 through 7, which encourages us do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Okay, ready to dive in? Let's do this.

Paula Behrens:

Philippians, chapter 4, verses 6 through 7, begins with a command Do not be anxious about anything. At first glance, this might seem challenging, even unrealistic, given the complexities of our lives. Bills, health concerns, relationships and a multitude of other factors can stir anxious thoughts. But what Paul is encouraging here is not a denial of anxiety, but a redirection. Rather than letting anxiety take the steering wheel, we are invited to redirect our focus toward God through prayer. Paul continues saying In every situation, by prayer and petition. This phrase emphasizes that there is no aspect of our lives that is too trivial or too vast for God. Whether it is a concern about a presentation at work or a long-term issue like financial stability, god wants us to bring everything before Him. Prayer opens the channel of communication with God, aligning our hearts with His divine will and allowing us to lay down our burdens at His feet. Petition goes a step further. It's a heartfelt request to God that acknowledges our dependence on him. By petitioning God, we're not only expressing our needs, but also demonstrating trust in his sovereign power to provide what is best for us. It's a beautiful exchange, where we place our concerns in God's hands and, in return, receive his peace and assurance.

Paula Behrens:

Paul continues With thanksgiving. Gratitude and thankfulness are fundamental aspects of living a life grounded in Christ. We know that, but by coupling our prayers and requests with thanksgiving, we shift our perspective from the scarcity of what we are lacking to the abundance of what God has already provided. Gratitude serves as a reminder of God's past faithfulness, encouraging us to trust in his present and future promises. When we approach God with thankful hearts, our spirits are uplifted. This act of thanksgiving transforms our prayer life, enabling us to see beyond our immediate worries and recognize the fingerprints of God throughout our lives.

Paula Behrens:

And this is my favorite part. Paul writes from the depths of his experience, saying and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Now, this peace isn't simply an absence of conflict or stress. It is a profound, deep-seated tranquility that comes from relying on God. It surpasses all human understanding because it exists even amidst chaos, offering solace when circumstances suggest otherwise. This divine peace acts as a guardian, shielding our hearts and our minds from the destructive nature of anxiety. It protects our mental and emotional well-being, sustaining us in moments where we might otherwise feel overwhelmed. The peace of God is a testament to his care and provision, promising that, no matter the storm, we are safe within his presence.

Paula Behrens:

Okay, here are a few practical steps to applying this scripture. One establish a daily routine where you set aside time to pray. Use this time to unload your anxieties onto God and thank him for his blessings. Blend quiet time with scripture meditation to deepen your spiritual connection. Two maintain a journal to record your prayers, petitions and reflections of gratitude. This journal can serve as a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness over time and help you recognize the growth and changes in your emotional and spiritual journey. This is where the idea of the Faith Building Club came in. If you are not in the club yet, make sure you check the show notes for a link to get in there with us.

Paula Behrens:

Three, and here's a great little tip Regularly affirm Philippians, chapter 4, verse 6 and 7, over your life. Write it on post-it notes and place it where you see it often Mirrors, refrigerators or anywhere else in your home or workplace. Let the uplifting words of scripture embed in your consciousness as a reminder of God's promise and peace. Four, and don't forget to list three things you're thankful for each day and don't just think about them. Write them down. Engaging in this gratitude practice will cultivate a mindset of positivity and appreciation, counteracting anxious thoughts with the acknowledgement of God's grace.

Paula Behrens:

Five, s hare your journey with trusted friends or a faith community. Being part of a supportive network can provide additional prayer support and encouragement, lightening your load and enriching your prayer life. Six, i ncorporate mindful breathing during your prayer time. Breathe in deeply as you focus on God's presence, inviting a sense of calm into the depths of your soul as you lay your request before your Heavenly Father. I love to put a drop of calming essential oils in my hands for this last step. Not only does it smell amazing, but it is actually healing for the body.

Paula Behrens:

In this world, anxiety can seem all-consuming, but through prayer and supplication, combined with gratitude, we as believers can handle anxiety differently. Philippians, chapter 4, verse 6 through 7 isn't just a command. It's a divine invitation to experience God's peace on the deepest level. I hope this has been helpful.
