The Red Sea closes, the enemy is gone, and freedom finally feels real… until the next morning when you’re still hungry, still tired, and still unsure how you’re going to make it. That “after the miracle” moment is where a lot of us get confused, and it’s exactly where Exodus gets painfully practical. We pick up part two of our Exodus study to talk about the wilderness season that follows breakthrough and why it may be God’s classroom, not God’s punishment.
We walk through manna as daily provision, including God’s specific instruction to gather only what you need for today. We slow down over the sixth-day exception where the double portion doesn’t spoil, and we connect the dots between trusting God for daily bread and trusting Him enough to rest. We also dig into the meaning of manna and why the New Testament keeps that word as Jesus points back to it in John 6, calling Himself the true bread from heaven.
Then the crises keep coming: no water, a sudden battle, and a leader on the edge. We talk about water from the rock, Moses needing Aaron and Hur to hold up his arms, and Jethro’s wise counsel that delegation is not weakness but stewardship. If you’re spiritually dry, overwhelmed, or trying to hold everything together alone, this is a gentle invitation to trust God again today. Welcome And Series Setup
Paula BehrensHey friend, welcome back to Living on Purpose in Christ. I'm Paula, and today we're picking back up right where we left off in our walk through Exodus. This is part two of our four-part series. And if you missed the part one, I'd go back and catch that one first because today builds right on top of it. Quick note, though, before we dive in, there is a full printable Bible study to go along with this series over at PaulaBehrens.com in the store under "Printable Resources." And it goes so much deeper than we've got time for today, leader's guide included. Okay, I'll circle back to that at the end. So stick with me all the way through.
The Morning After The Miracle
Paula BehrensHere's what I want to talk about today. What happens after the miracle? Because we love talking about the mountaintop moments, the parted sea, the answered prayer, the breakthrough we prayed years for, but almost nobody talks about the very next morning after that. The morning where you wake up and you're still tired, you're still hungry, and you still don't know how you're going to make it through the day. If you've ever felt let down by what came after your miracle, today's episode is for you. Are you finding it challenging to maintain your spiritual practices or yearning for a more peaceful, God-aligned day? I'm Paula, and I've been there too. Balancing spiritual habits with a busy life can be difficult. I longed for a deeper connection with God but struggled with consistency. Then I found the perfect approach. If you seek simple ways to deepen your connection with God, this podcast is for you. Please take a moment to follow the show, leave a review, and share with your friends who need a little biblical encouragement today.

I truly appreciate your support. All right, it's time to get started.
Grumbling In The Wilderness
Paula BehrensGrab your Bible, dust off that journal, cozy up to your favorite beverage, and let's dive in. So Israel is free. The Red Sea is behind them, Pharaoh's army is gone, and you would think the hard part was officially over. It is not. Within about six weeks, the entire nation is standing in the wilderness, and Exodus 16 tells us they start grumbling against Moses and Aaron, wishing out loud that they had just died back in Egypt, where at least they had bread and meat to eat. Now, before we judge them too harshly, let's be honest. Freedom is wonderful, but freedom with an empty stomach and no idea where your next meal is coming from is genuinely terrifying. Their complaint wasn't crazy, it was human.
Manna And Learning Daily Trust
Paula BehrensAnd this is where God does something so interesting. He doesn't scold them for their fear. He simply provides. Every morning, a fine, flaky substance appears on the ground with the dew, and the people look at it and basically say, what is this? Which, in Hebrew, is actually where the word manna (μάννα) or what some people call manna (μάννα) comes from. They start calling it mān (מָן), which literally means, what is it in Hebrew. So for 40 years, the entire nation eats a food whose name is a question mark. I love that. Every single morning for four decades, breakfast itself was a reminder that God does things we don't fully understand and don't need to. But here's the detail that always gets me. God gives very specific instructions. He says, gather only what you need for today. Don't try to save some for tomorrow. And of course, some people try anyway, and it breeds worms and starts to stink by morning. God was not just feeding their bodies. He was retraining their whole nervous system, teaching an entire generation that had grown up in slavery where scarcity was the only reality they had ever known, that they could actually trust him for tomorrow without hoarding today. And then there's this one
Sabbath Rest Built Into Provision
Paula Behrensexception built right into the instructions that I think is easy to skim right past. On the sixth day, God tells them to gather double, enough for two days instead of one, because the seventh day was going to be a holy day of rest. And that doubled portion, unlike every other day, didn't spoil overnight. No worms, no stench. It just stayed good. Think about what that means. Weeks before God ever hands down the Ten Commandments at Sinai, weeks before Sabbath rest becomes an official command carved in stone, God is already building a rhythm of rest directly into how his people eat. Provision and rest were never meant to be separate conversations. From the very first breakfast in the wilderness, God was teaching them that trusting him for daily bread and trusting him enough to actually stop working were part of the exact same lesson. I want to slow down here for a second because
Manna From Exodus To Jesus
Paula Behrensthis Hebrew word mān (מָן) carries so much more than we usually give it credit for. As I mentioned, the word itself essentially means what is it? Which tells you something remarkable right from the start. This provision from God didn't come labeled, categorized, or fully explained. It simply showed up, mysterious and sufficient, and the people had to receive it before they ever fully understood it. Now here's where the Septuagint comes in. When Jewish scholars translated the Old Testament into Greek a few centuries before Christ, they came to this word and didn't even attempt to translate its meaning. Instead, they transliterated it, simply carrying the sound of the Hebrew word straight into the Greek as manna (μάννα). It's one of those rare words that crosses over from Hebrew into Greek almost untouched, which tells you the translators felt this word was too unique, too tied to that specific miracle to swap out an ordinary Greek term for bread or food. And that Greek word, manna (μάννα), is exactly the word that shows up in the New Testament in John chapter 6, where Jesus stands in front of a crowd still thinking about loaves and fishes, and he tells them plainly that their ancestors ate manna (μάννα) in the wilderness and died, but he himself is the true bread that comes down from heaven, the bread that gives life to the world. That connection is worth sitting with, friend. The wilderness generation received a daily provision they didn't fully understand, gathered fresh each morning, with one exception of the sixth day, when they gathered a double portion so they wouldn't have to work on the Sabbath, and that portion alone stayed good until they were allowed to gather it again. And Jesus deliberately reaches back to that exact word, carried all the way from Hebrew into Greek to describe himself. Not a provision we store up once and never think about again, but a relationship we return to daily, fresh, every single morning, whether we fully understand it or not. Not long after the manna (μάννα) starts falling,
Water From The Rock Again
Paula BehrensIsrael runs into another crisis. No water. And once again the people turn on Moses, this time so intensely that Moses cries out to God that he's afraid they're about to stone him. God tells Moses to take his staff, the same staff he used back in Egypt, and strike a rock at Horeb, and the water comes pouring out of solid stone in front of the entire nation. I want you to notice something about the location of this event. Moses names the place Massah (מַסָּה) and Meribah (מְרִיבָה), which basically means testing and quarreling, because that's exactly what happened there. And here's what I think is so interesting. The test wasn't really about whether God could provide water. God had already provided them with manna (μάννα). The test was about whether Israel, including Moses himself, would trust him again in a brand new crisis after he had already been faithful in the last one, which, if we're honest, is a test most of us fail on a fairly regular basis. You see, we forget yesterday's provision the moment today's crisis shows up, right? Right after the water, Israel
Winning Battles With Help
Paula Behrensgets attacked by the Amalekites, and Moses sends Joshua out to fight while he climbs a hill to watch, holding up the staff. And here's the detail I love. As long as Moses holds his hands up, Israel wins the battle below. But Moses is human, and eventually his arms get tired, and the moment his hands drop, the momentum shifts the other way. So what does Moses do? He doesn't white knuckle it alone. Aaron and a man named Hur literally sit Moses down on a stone, and each of them holds up one of his arms until his hands stay steady, until sunset, and Israel wins the battle completely. I think this might be one of the most quietly profound pictures in the entire Old Testament. Even the man of God, chose to lead an entire nation out of slavery, couldn't sustain victory by himself. He needed people willing to physically hold him up when his own strength ran out. The final piece of our passage today might be my favorite because it's so wonderfully practical. Moses' father-in-law, Jethro,
Jethro’s Delegation Wisdom
Paula Behrenscomes to visit, and he watches Moses spend an entire day single-handedly settling every single dispute that comes up among the people from sunup to sundown with a line of people waiting the whole time. And Jethro, bless his heart, looks at his son-in-law and basically says, What in the world are you doing? This is not good. You are going to wear yourself out and everyone waiting in that line along with you. So Jethro suggests something radical for the time. Moses should choose capable, trustworthy people and delegate real authority to them, only bringing the hardest cases to himself. And Moses actually listens. He doesn't get defensive. He doesn't insist he's the only one capable of doing it right. He receives correction from someone who loves him enough to tell him the truth, and the whole nation is better for it. So here's what I want you
Wilderness Takeaways And Invitations
Paula Behrensto walk away with today. The wilderness season after your miracle isn't a sign that something went wrong. It's the place where God teaches you to trust him daily instead of once, where he shows you that you were never meant to hold up your own arms alone, and where wise counsel from someone who loves you might be exactly what saves you from burning out completely. If you're in a wilderness season right now, tired, hungry for answers, and maybe a little worn out from holding everything up by yourself, I want you to know that this part of God's story was written with you in mind. Okay, if today's episode spoke to you, come and go deeper with me.
